If You Have Cancer, You Should Know About Bone Marrow Transplant. Read This Post To Find Out Why

BONE MARROW is the soft & spongy center of your bone; and this is where stem cells are found, which later grow into white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. White blood cells strengthen our immune system. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. And platelets clot the blood to prevent bleeding. Now if you have cancer – such as leukemia or lymphoma - and are taking treatment for the same, you are at a greater risk of getting your bone marrow damaged or diseased. This is where bone marrow transplant comes in!

In a typical bone marrow transplant in Delhi, the transplant team replaces the damaged bone marrow with the healthy bone marrow. The transplant may last for a few hours. After the transplant, your care team will work with you to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.

After transplant, you can live a happy and full life. You'll develop healthy habits, such as dietary management, to improve your overall health and build muscles along the way. You'll also learn to monitor your health to avoid the common transplant-related issues.

One more thing – after transplant, the patient is a greater risk of developing infection. So, for the first few weeks at home, your family and friends will have to wear masks and take other safety measures when talking to you face-to-face. Your doctor will guide you in this.

Is a Weight Loss Surgery Worth The Money, Time, And Pain You Undergo?

Let's first understand weight loss surgery –

In a weight loss surgery – also known as bariatric surgery – your doctor operates on your stomach and small intestine, which reduces your daily intake of food. And this eventually leads to a gradual weight loss in you.

At present, lap band surgery (where a band is tightened around the upper portion of your stomach to reduce its original size), gastric sleeve surgery (where your stomach is surgically reduced to a sleeve like formation), and gastric bypass surgery (where doctor operates on your stomach as well as on your small intestine) are the most in-demand weight loss surgeries. Hospitals in Punjab, India are among the top hospitals in India in conducting weight loss surgeries.

Weight loss surgery – should you or should you not

Weight loss surgery can be a life-saver for a person who is suffering from morbid obesity, which is a life-threatening condition. Morbid obese are more likely to develop diseases like diabetes, and high blood pressure. A weight loss surgery, in this case, can give a new lease of life to the person.

However, weight loss surgery should never be seen as an overnight solution for a slim and trim body.

Try aerobics, yoga, dieting, medications, rather than undergoing the pain and complications that a surgery brings along. However, there are cases when these things do not help. In those rare cases, surgery may be considered.

You Can Live Life To The Full Even After A Heart Transplant

Nobody can understand the turmoil that a patient and his family go through during a transplant. You live day to day, and really do not have an idea as to how you should react when recommended a heart transplant.

A heart transplant, in particular, is still a complex procedure; difficulties start surfacing right from the time when you look for a donor heart. And even if you find one, you are made to go through tests and examinations to find the compatibility between the donor heart and the recipient. This is done so that your body doesn't reject the new organ.

But, a heart transplant in India shouldn't mean an end to a happy life. In fact, you can live life to the fullest even after a transplant. Join a support group. Always be in touch with the transplant team. Don't comprise on the follow up care. Keep your family and friends around. And rush to your surgeon if you experience some unusual complexities. Medications will also help you live with the new heart better.

There is life after heart transplant in India. You just need to plan it out. Believe in yourself. Believe in god. And believe in your doctor.

Find Out More About Gall Bladder Surgery And What Necessitates It

Scarless Gall Bladder Surgery (or, Cholecystectomy) is performed to remove the gall bladder from the abdomen. Gall bladder is a pear-shaped organ that sits just below the liver. It collects and stores bile (digestive fluid that is produced in the liver). The surgery is performed when a person feels pain from the gall stones that block the flow of bile as well.

The scarless gall bladder surgery is performed by making four small incisions on the stomach, through which a tine camera and special surgical tools are inserted inside the abdomen. In this type of surgery, the patient can return home the same day the surgery is done. And since it is done laparoscopically, the patient feels lesser pain, and resumes his/her normal activities much sooner. These benefits make laparoscopic surgery or minimally invasive surgery a 'preferred surgical method' for countless surgeons across the world.

Scarless gall bladder surgery is a common surgery these days, and carries only a small risk of complications. But make sure you select an experienced surgeon and discuss the post-operative care.

In some cases, the surgeon may choose to make one large incision to remove the gall bladder; this type of surgery is called open gall bladder surgery.

What You Can Expect During A Knee Replacement Surgery

A typical knee replacement surgery usually lasts about two to three hours. During the surgical procedure, the knee is in a bent position; this is done to make sure that all surfaces of the joint are fully exposed.

Your transplant team will make an incision, which is about 6 to 10 inches in length. After that, the surgeon will move aside the kneecap and cut away the damaged joint surfaces. The damaged joint surfaces are then replaced with the artificial ones, which are made up of metal and plastic.

Post knee replacement surgery, you'll be wheeled to a recovery room for 1 to 2 hours; here you'll be monitored for any complications associated with the surgery. Then you'll be moved to a hospital room for a couple of days. You may experience some pain; however, the pain relief medications, prescribed by your transplant team, will help control the pain.

A physical therapist will show you how to exercise the new joint. Within a couple of weeks, you'll start experiencing good recovery, provided you follow all the instructions provided by your care team. Most of these instructions would be related to your diet, exercise, and wound care after the knee replacement surgery.

Stem Cells – What Are They and What They Do?

Stem cells are our bodies' raw materials. Under the right conditions, they divide and form new cells in the body, which are called daughter cells. These cells grow to become white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. These cells then perform their specified jobs in the body.

Researchers continue to work on stem cells, and hope for major breakthroughs in the coming years.

Stem Cell Transplant -

You may have heard about stem cell transplant in the news. And you may be wondering whether this procedure can help you or a loved-one with a serious disease. Well, the transplant is a life-saving procedure for patients with various types of blood cancer; the procedure introduces new and healthy stem cells in the body; this is done to replace the diseased or damaged bone marrow.

Autologous and Allogeneic -

Autologous transplants are ones, where bone marrow is removed from the patient itself.

Allogeneic transplants involve a donor, who is often someone from the family such as brother and sister.

Stem cells have started attracting a lot of attention from the researchers; these cells are being studied to understand how diseases develop in one's body. People who might benefit from stem cell therapies include those with spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, stroke, cancer, etc.

So, What Is It That Makes Scarless Bariatric Surgery So Popular Around The Globe?

One of the biggest benefits of a laparoscopic bariatric surgery is it doesn't involve making large cuts on the patients' bodies. So, you end up with minimal scars and great benefits. Be it gastric band, gastric sleeve, or gastric bypass, all these surgeries can be done laparoscopically.

Under a scarless bariatric surgery, your doctor will make only a few, very small sized incisions on your abdomen to gain access to your digestive system. Gastric band is the least invasive procedure wherein surgeons only place a silicone filled band around the top portion of your stomach. This is an effective as well as reversible weight loss procedure, which doesn't amputate your stomach and small intestine.

Gastric sleeve, however, requires amputation of your stomach; in this procedure, a large portion of your stomach is surgically removed. Post-procedure, you won't be able to eat and drink as much as you used to consume earlier. This is something that your doctor will tell you; in fact, you'll be required to learn new eating and drinking habits so that you don't face much difficult in coping with the new digestive system after the surgery.

In gastric bypass, your doctor not only cuts a large portion of your stomach, but also makes your digestive system bypass a certain length of your small intestine.

Tummy Tuck Vs. Diet And Exercise

Who doesn't want a flat and shapely abdomen?! Women can die to have one. A flat and shapely abdomen tells a lot about you, and about your concern for health and fitness. Most believe that tummy tuck is a quick and effective way to achieve an adorable tummy. Though it is true, diet and exercise, as senior plastic surgeons say, can also give you great results. The best way out, however, is to have the best of both.

A tummy tuck gives you a well-toned abdomen, tightens the abdominal muscles, and helps you live life with a new zest. However, even with the surgery, you have to adopt a healthier lifestyle to ensure only required fat levels.

Tummy tuck surgery in India can give you amazing results, but it has to be complemented with a strict regimen of diet and exercise.

Diet and exercise alone can also give you a flatter abdomen; however, for that, you may have to wait for a little longer. The combination of surgery and diet & exercise can greatly benefit you. Also, you shouldn't have unrealistic expectations from the surgery. All you have to do is look for a hospital and a plastic surgeon who is experienced with tummy tuck.

So, What Radiation Oncology is All About? Find Out in This Post.

Radiation Oncology refers to the medical speciality that deals with cancer treatment using radiation therapy. The doctor that specializes in radiation oncology (radiation oncologist) uses highly regulated doses of high-energy radiation to treat a wide range of cancers. Under the treatment, high energy beams from the machine are aimed at precise points on your body.

Radiation therapy causes some cancer cells to die immediately after treatment; however, most of the cells die because radiation damages the chromosomes and DNA of the body; this ensures that cancerous cells do not multiply and the tumour doesn't grow in size.

Though radiation damages both cancerous and healthy cells, the goal of this treatment is to ensure minimum possible damage to the healthy cells.

Radiation oncologists often work with the team of oncologists, surgeons, and other doctors to offer the best cancer treatment to the patient. At present, there are many hospitals, which offer 'radiation oncology in India'. However, you should get yourself treated in the best hospital in the country that you can afford.

Please note: Your treatment team will go through your medical history, stage of cancer, your general health status, and will only then chart out a treatment plan for you.

There is More To Familial Cancer Than Angelina Jolie's Double Mastectomy. Take a Deep Breath And Read On

If you have no idea about familial cancer, it is cancer that one is likely to inherit from one's family. So, if one has a strong family history of cancer, the person is likely to get affected. Angelina Jolie too were worried about this inhering-cancer-from-family thing, and got herself tested.

Turned out, she was at a very high risk of developing breast as well as ovarian cancer (Ovarian cancer is a cancerous growth arising from the ovary. The ovary is an ovum-producing reproductive organ, often found in pairs as part of the vertebrate female reproductive system). Surgery was found to be the best thing that she could do to reduce her chances of developing cancer. So, she underwent double mastectomy, which refers to the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely; her chances of developing breast cancer have now dropped from 87% to under 5%.

In the New York Times op-ed where Jolie first spoke about her surgery, she talked about the “faulty” gene that can cause both breast and ovarian cancer. However, the genes are not to be blamed; in fact, these genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) help stop cancers from developing. As a matter of fact, everyone has two copies of BRCA1 and BRCA2; it's only when one of the copies has some sort of fault and doesn't work, the person faces a high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Is there anything for you here?

If you're worried about the risk of developing breast cancer or ovarian cancer because of a family history of cancer, you should immediately discuss this with your doctor. He/she may refer you to a Familial Cancer Centre. Services that a Familial Cancer Centre offers typically include testing, medical advice, counseling, and support.

The specialists will go through your family history; based on the tests, you'll be given an estimate of your inherited risk of cancer. Follow-up and options for early detection and prevention will be discussed.

Your first appointment may last for an hour. You may need to visit the centre more than once.

At Max Healthcare, we've state-of-the-art facilities and best of doctors for familial cancer. Book an appointment now!

  • Who’s tried everything else but surgery to get rid of the fat of his/her body
  • Who’s healthy enough to undergo the surgery

Gastric Band, Gastric Bypass, and Gastric Sleeve are the popular weight loss surgeries, which are done with minimally invasive technology. With minimally invasive or laparoscopic procedure, surgeons don’t have to resort to large cuts on the body to access the stomach; in fact, 3 or 4 small incisions are made on the abdomen area so as to operate on the stomach. Once the surgery is completed, instruments are safely taken out of the body. Patients usually experience faster recover and lesser pain when they get operated laparoscopically. Kudos to medical science, and advancements in healthcare technology!

After Surgery:

Life changes a lot after surgery. Over time, you notice a great change in your body; this increases your confidence in yourself. You feel healthier and happier than ever before. To put it simply, life gets better!

Changes take place in your eating habits as well. For example, you don’t eat as much as you used to eat before surgery; this is because of the change that’s been made to your stomach. In Gastric Band, surgeons place a band around the stomach so as to divide the stomach into two portions, with a little space between the two. In Gastric Sleeve, stomach is reduced to a sleeve like shape so that the patient consumes less. Gastric Bypass is more effective, as surgeons also operate on the small intestine to allow less absorption of nutrients in the body. It’s the surgeon who decided which surgery is the best for the patient in question.
